Port of Everett SHANNON&WILSON,INC.
Attn: Mr. Erik Gerking
April 16, 2013
■ Gazetas,Dakoulas, and Dennehy (1990): This paper uses the field performance of 75
anchored sheet pile quay walls to develop a plot that can be used to estimate the degree of
damage during a seismic event. The estimation is based on the wall geometry, the soil
characteristics, and the intensity of seismic shaking. Using the equations and figures
presented in the paper for the project site, the predicted displacement of the wall is about
one foot.
■ McCullough and Dickenson (1998): This paper compares the degree of ground
improvement behind a bulkhead wall to lateral movement due to a seismic event. The
method is based on the ground motion intensity of the earthquake, the wall stiffness, the
soil characteristics, and the geometry of the wall system. We used the equations and
charts in the paper and assumed zero ground improvement and estimated a permanent
horizontal displacement of about two feet.
The following photographs from the 1995 Kobe earthquake (Magnitude 6.9)represent examples
of the type of damage that correspond to liquefaction induced settlement and several feet of
lateral spreading:
` 4" r
 t
i
ter.
