A group of high growth business categories in our state include wood pallets and skids, periodicals, industrial gasses, miscellaneous plastics products, plumbing and heating equipment, conveyors and hoists and cranes, industrial trucks and tractors, electronic components, x-ray apparatus and tubes, process and electronic measurement devices, medical and dental instruments. The third group are of lesser growth potential, but for other reasons show opportunities within the State of Washington. These include sporting and athletic goods, mens and boys clothing, shipbuilding and repairing, canned and cured seafood, fresh or frozen packaged fish, wood office furniture and furnishings, asphalt belts and coatings, industrial controls, fabricated wire products, metal hardware sash and trim, paving mixtures and blocks, telephone and other communication apparatus, aircraft equipment and servicing, refrigeration and heating equipment, games and toys, luggage, farm and general industrial machinery. Observation: Job growth of the future will not come from the Fortune 500, but rather from those companies well after that. While business categories in a growth mode can and are being identified, the identification and contact of those who are in a growth posture are very much a moving target requiring an on-going effort in an arena that changes monthly, if not weekly. Recommendation: It may be useful to formally designate a focal point such as EDC to coordinate the retaining and nurturing of businesses already in the Everett area. Such expansion and nurturing is every bit as important as the development of new business locating in Everett. Observation: As the State of Washington improves the public tools available for community development, it is important to match equally aggressive private forms of financing if employment and tax base goals are to be met. The Feature of the Paine Field Area TPPG Observation: Predicting airport demand has, for various reasons, become very inexact and volatile. The adopted Paine Field role designation was based on the best information available at the time, but as the future bcomes more the present, modifications of that role definition may be appropriate in light of unanticipated events or conditions. Observation: Another important factor considered is the depth of feeling in the level of community involvement in the decisions that have and are impacting the airport area. Observation: A majority of people interviewed believe that the airport role and resulting master plan are examples of productive community-based negotiation and compromise. Economic realities in the County and the region make the role definition, as adopted, an acceptable current planning decision. Observation: Sea-Tac International will handle all commercial air or scheduled service well into the 21st Century. Moreover, the general feeling of the air service business is the desire to be co-located with commercial air service. Observation: Air cargo activities in the future will be at a much less dramatic pace than in the past several years.
