• Recommendation: Additional paid staff support for the Chamber of Commerce
should be initiated. This staff person could be responsible for tourism, special
events, and visitor service functions for the Chamber.
Medical Development
Recommendation: To ease the development process around Everett General and to
protect the future close-in to Providence Hospital, the creation of hospital impact
zones is suggested.
Recommendation: The City should encourage the development of both new medical
offices and satellite offices of current Everett doctors to the north and the south
of Everett to expand the medical base of operations for Everett.
Recommendation: The City, the hospitals, the Chamber and the media must
become more in tune with the importance of medical service as an important
economic factor in Everett. The participants must undertake a better public
relations and marketing campaign.
International Commerce Activities
Sister city relationships, personal relationships and visitor services have gone a long
way in developing international trade relationships, even to the extent of education
of the citizens to speak Asian languages.
Observation: Major drawing card for the City of Everett is the Boeing facility.
Observation: When facilities and amenities are put in place, international
activities soon follow.
Recommendation: The current sister city relationship in Japan seems to be an
ideal match with Everett and should be encouraged with sufficient financial support
from the City and the private sector to give it a chance to flourish.
Recommendation: Japanese and other Asian language should be offered in the
Everett school system at the high school level.
Recommendation: Booth or information counters about Everett at the airport
should be developed.
Other Observations: Keeping individuals and agencies who deal with foreign
prospects on a regular basis advised of the activities in Everett, the Port of Everett
and with EDC, will be worthwhile. Further observations, relationships with Alaska
and the various industries who deal in Alaska should be pursued. Finally,
commercial recreation opportunities on the waterfront can ultimately lead to
international trade relationships and should be viewed as an opportunity to nurture
and develop long-term relationships.
