1
3.02 GROUND SURFACE PREPARATION '
A. Prior to excavating or placing embankment, complete all clearing and grubbing operations.
Before placing any embankment, scarify ground surface to minimum 6" depth to provide
ample bond between old and new material.
3.03 EMBANKMENT ,
A. Place embankment of earth material in horizontal layers not exceeding 8 inches loose
measurement.Compact each layer as specified before placing the next layer. Use effective
spreading equipment on each lift to obtain uniform thickness prior to compacting. As the r
compaction of each layer progresses, continuous leveling and manipulating will be required
to assure uniform density. Add water where required to obtain the specified density. Frozen
material shall not be used in construction of embankments.
3.04 COMPACTION
A. Any loose material remaining after stripping or excavating, should be moisture conditioned as
required and properly compacted to at least 95%relative compaction prior to fill placement or
removed and replaced with structural fill. All imported structural fill material should be placed
in lifts not exceeding 8 inches prior to compaction and compacted to a minimum of 95% of
the maximum dry density as determined by the ASTM D-1557(modified Proctor)method of
compaction. If structural fill upon which footings or concrete are to be established become
disturbed, they must be recompacted to the above compaction requirements.
3.05 ROCK EMBANKMENT ,
A. Rock embankment is defined as embankment constructed of materials with 50 percent or r
more by weight, at field moisture content, or particles larger than those passing a No.4 sieve.
Density requirement will not apply to portions of embankment defined as rock embankment.
3.06 PLACING ROCK EMBANKMENT ,
A. Place, spread and level rock embankment in 8-inch layers and fill the interstices with fine
material to produce a dense compact embankment. In addition, a sheepsfoot roller capable '
of exerting a force of 250 pounds per inch of length of roller drum shall be in continuous
operation during placement, each lift shall be compacted a minimum of three complete
passes over its full width before placing the next layer. Other types of compacting equipment
may be approved for use when in the opinion of the Owner's Representative satisfactory
results can be obtained.
3.07 OVERSIZE ROCK
A. Unless otherwise approved, all material larger than 4 inches shall not be used as structural r
fill.
3.08 BORROW PITS '
A. Borrow material and/or structural fill material shall be obtained from commercial or other
approved sources off of the project site. All imported material used at the work site shall be
approved by the Owner's Representative prior to any placement of the material. In the event
material is placed and later determined by the Owner's Representative as being not
acceptable for use,the Contractor shall remove the unauthorized material and replace it with
acceptable material at the contractor's expense.
r
SPORTSMAN'S WAREHOUSE 02223-2 '
