1 <br /> SECTION 31 50 00-EXCAVATION SUPPORT AND PROTECTION <br /> 1 PART I GENERAL <br /> 1.1 SUMMARY <br /> A. This Section includes shoring and support systems of all types necessary to protect existing <br /> ' utility facilities and new utility facilities. <br /> B. The Contractor is responsible for the selection and design of excavation support systems and <br /> the design of utility support systems in conformance with Federal, State and City <br /> ' requirements and the minimum design criteria specified herein. <br /> C. Temporary shoring is to be installed for protection of the existing trees to remain, structures <br /> to remain, buried utilities to remain, adjacent roadways and walkways and surrounding <br /> properties. <br /> D. Care must be taken during the planning and construction of earth support systems to <br /> minimize settlements and displacements of the shoring system itself and to surrounding <br /> properties. <br /> 1.2 DESIGN CRITERIA <br /> A. Design excavation support systems and all components to support the earth pressures, <br /> unrelieved hydrostatic pressures, utility loads, equipment, traffic, railroad, and construction <br /> loads including impact, and other surcharge loads in such manner as will allow the safe and <br /> expeditious construction of the permanent structures to minimize ground movement or <br /> settlement, and to prevent damage to adjacent structures,roadways,railroads and utilities. <br /> B. Design support members to resist the maximum loads expected to occur during the <br /> ' excavation and support removal stages. <br /> C. Design system so that water seepage is minimized. Provide dewatering and positive means <br /> for preventing sloughing and containing material behind lagging. <br /> ' D. Design system to prevent sloughing and to contain running sand and silt behind the lagging. <br /> ' E. Vertical support capacity shall be provided for wall systems and internal bracing elements for <br /> loads due to vertical force components and live loads on any portion of the system. <br /> ' F. Design calculations and shop drawings of all excavation support systems. <br /> 1. Calculations and shop drawings shall be made and stamped by a registered Professional <br /> ' Civil or Structural Engineer experienced in the design of excavation support systems in <br /> the State of Washington. <br /> 2.
