1 Section 2322 - Existing Masonry Chimneys <br /> 2 (a) Gas venting into Existing Masonry Chimneys. Existing <br /> lined masonry chimneys and unlined chimneys with not <br /> 3 more than one side exposed to the outside may be used <br /> to vent gas water heaters provided: <br /> 4 <br /> 1. Approved liner shall be installed in an existing <br /> 5 unlined masonry chimney when deemed necessary by <br /> the Building Official considering local problems of <br /> 6 vent gas condensate . <br /> 7 2. The effective cross-sectional area is not more than <br /> four times the cross-sectional area of the vent and <br /> 8 chimney connectors entering the chimney. <br /> 9 3. The effective area of the chimney when connected to <br /> more than one appliance shall be not less than the <br /> 10 area of the largest vent or chimney connector plus <br /> 50 per cent of the area of the additional vent or <br /> 11 chimney connectors . <br /> 12 4 . Automatically controlled gas water heaters connecte4 <br /> to a chimney which also serves equipment burning <br /> 13 solid or liquid fuel shall be equipped with an auto <br /> matic pilot. A gas water heater vent connector and <br /> 14 a chimney connector from an appliance burning another <br /> fuel may be connected into the same chimney through <br /> 15 separate openings providing the gas water heater is <br /> vented above the other fuel burning appliance or <br /> 16 both may be connected through a single opening if <br /> joined by a suitable fitting located at the <br /> 17 <br /> 18 IS HEREBY AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS: <br /> 19 chimney. If two or more openings are provided into <br /> one chimney, they shall be at different levels so <br /> 20 that no portion of one inlet is in the same hori- <br /> zontal plane of another inlet. <br /> 21 <br /> 5. The chimney passageway shall be examined to ascer- <br /> 22 tain that it is clear and free of obstructions and <br /> shall be cleaned if previously used for.. venting <br /> 23 solid or liquid fuel burning appliances . <br /> 24 6 . The vent or chimney connector shall enter the chim- <br /> ney not less than six inches (6" ) from the bottom <br /> 25 of the chimney. The chimney shall be provided with <br /> a cleanout. If six inches (6" ) are not available , <br /> 26 a cleanout shall be provided. <br /> 27 (b) Unlined chimneys with more than one side exposed to the <br /> outside shall be lined with an approved liner unless <br /> 28 otherwise approved by the Building Official . <br /> 29 (c) When inspection reveals that an existing chimney is not <br /> safe for the intended application, it shall be rebuilt <br /> 30 in a manner acceptable to the Building Official or re- <br /> placed with an approved gas vent or factory built <br /> 31 chimney. <br /> 32 <br />
