• <br /> • <br /> 1 (b) Where such water heaters installed within a garage are <br /> enclosed in a separate, approved compartment having access <br /> 2 only from outside of the garage, such water heaters may be <br /> installed at floor level provided the required combustion air <br /> 3 is also taken from the exterior of the garage. Fuel burning <br /> water heaters having sealed combustion chambers need not <br /> 4 be elevated. <br /> 5 (c) All water heaters installed in areas where they may be <br /> subjected to mechanical damage shall be suitably guarded <br /> 6 against such damage by being installed behind adequate <br /> barriers or by being elevated or located out of the normal <br /> 7 path of a vehicle using any such garage. <br /> 8 Section 2311 - Access and Working Space <br /> 9 Every water heater installation shall be accessible for inspection, repair <br /> or replacement. The appliance space shall be provided with an opening or <br /> 10 doorway of sufficient size to remove the water heater. In no case shall <br /> such opening or doorway be less than twenty-four (24) inches in width. <br /> 11 Such access shall be continuous and shall be one or any combination of the <br /> following means: <br /> 12 <br /> 1. By a passageway not less than three (3) feet in door <br /> 13 width and six (6) feet three (3) inches in door height. <br /> Stairways and ramps leading to or a part of such <br /> 14 passageways shall comply with the Uniform Building <br /> Code. <br /> 15 <br /> 2. Every attic, roof, mezzanine or platform more than <br /> 16 four (4) feet above the ground or floor level shall be <br /> made accessible by a stairway or ladder permanently <br /> 17 fastened to the building. Such ladder or stairway <br /> shall not be more than eighteen (18) feet in length <br /> 18 between landings and not less than sixteen (16) inches <br /> in width. Such ladder shall have rungs spaced not <br /> 19 more than fourteen (14) inches center to center and <br /> not less than six (6) inches from face to wall. <br /> 20 <br /> 3. By a trapdoor or opening and passageway not less <br /> 21 than thirty (30) inches by thirty (30) inches but in no <br /> case smaller than the water heater, the passageway <br /> 22 shall be continuous from the trap door or opening to <br /> the water heater. The trap door or opening shall be <br /> 23 located not more than twenty (20) feet from the <br /> water heater. <br /> 24 <br /> 4. Every passageway to an attic water heater shall have <br /> 25 a solid continuous flooring not less than twenty-four <br /> (24) inches wide from the trap door or opening to the <br /> 26 water heater. If the trap door or opening is more <br /> than four (4) feet above the floor, a stairway or <br /> 27 ladder permanently fastened to the building shall be <br /> provided. Such stairway or ladder shall lead directly <br /> 28 to the edge of the trap door or opening and shall <br /> comply with the provisions of this section. <br /> 29 <br /> 5. By a catwalk not less than twenty-four (24) inches <br /> 30 wide. Access to the catwalk shall be by ladder or <br /> stairs complying with the provisions of this section. <br /> 31 <br /> 32 <br /> - 18 - <br />
