The method of shonng shall be according to <br />the con�actor's design. The contractor mr,y elect to use a combiaation of shoring and overbreak, <br />[unneling, boring, sliding uench slvelds or other methods of accomplishing the work, provided the <br />method meets all applicable local, state and federal safery codes. Damages resulting from improper <br />cribbing or from failure to �:rib shall be the sole ruponsibiliry of the conuactor. <br />See Secrion 3-9 Underground Udlities for addidonal rcquirements on shoring requirements. <br />5-7.4(4) UNSiJI'I'ABLE i�IA'I�R1AL <br />Nhenever in excavating thE: uen�h for water mains and the bottom of the tn:nch ezposes peat, sofr clay, <br />quicksand, or other unsuita'�le material, such material shall be removed from the �ench and replaced by <br />Foundation Material Class A as specified in Section 3-20.6 of these Specifications. All unsuitable <br />tpaterial shall be loaded direcfly into trucks and hauled to a waste site ohtained by the con�actor. <br />Stockpiling of unsuitable material to the project site will not be allowed. <br />5-7.4(� BEDDING THL P7PE <br />Bedding material, when specified or required by the engineer shall bc Everett Washed Course Sand No. Z <br />as shown in Section 3-20.3 uf these Specifica[ions. Bedding is defined as 6 inches below the pipe, azound <br />the pipe and 12 inches abov�; the pipe. Narive material will normally be used for:bedding for ducti.le iron <br />pipe unless judged unsuitabl: by the engineer. ., :• <br />"-7.4(� BACHFII.T.ING TRENCHES <br />The contractor shall use s�:irable native excavated material for h�ench baekfill utiless notified by the <br />engineer that the native material is unsuitable_ The eagineer will examine excavated nauve material at the <br />timc of excavation to deteaiine its suitaUiliry for use as bacld'ill. Unsuitable backfill material shall be <br />removed from the site, disp��sed of, and repiaced by Everett Washed Course Sand No. 2 as specified in <br />Section 3-203 or Gcavel Bocrow as speeified in Section 3-20.2 of these Specifications and as d'uecied by <br />[he engineer. <br />In Uackfilling the �ench, the contracto[ shall take all necessary precautions [o protect the pipe �oa1 any <br />damage or shifdng. The con�actor sball backfill from tLe side of the trench co a maximum uniform depth <br />of 1 foot above the crown of the ductile iron pipe before starting mechanical compaction. <br />During all phases of the bac1�'illing operations and testing as oudined herein, the conttactor shall protect <br />the pipe installation, provide: for the maintenance of �affc as may be necessary, and provide for the <br />safery of properry and persons. • <br />See Section 3-9 for additioaal requirements on bacl�illing. <br />5-7.4(� COMPACTION I)F BACSFIT.L <br />Trench backfill shall 6e spread in layers and be compacted by mechanical tampers of the impact rype <br />approved by tl�e engineer. SVater settlmg will not be permitted.
