1•11111111111 IIIMI
DCI Response: The project scope of work has changed since the original drawing
submittal. An elevator addition is no longer part of the project. Based on the new scope
of work it is our opinion that there isn't a need for a geotechnical engineer to be involved
nor is there a new lateral system added.
4. Geotechnical observations should be performed for this project based on a review of the
structural drawings.A list of the required geotechnical observations should be provided in the
Structural General Notes. See IBC Sections 107.1 and 107.2.1. The following is a summary
based on a review of the construction drawings:
a. Movement monitoring of adjacent structures(IBC Sections 1803.5.7 and 1804.1).
b. Placement and compaction of structural backfill(IBC Section 1803.4).
DCI Response: Since there is no longer an elevator, there will not be an elevator pit that
will create the need for soil monitoring or new structural backfill.
5. The project includes installation of a new elevator system. The following comments should be
addressed:
a. The elevator design drawings should be included in the list of deferred submittals in
the structural notes. See IBC Section 107.3.4.1.
b. The design loads for the elevator system, including impact loading, should be specified in
the structural notes. At a minimum, estimated design loads should be specified for the
design, and verified when the elevator design drawings are submitted for review. See IBC
Sections 1603.1.8 and 1607.9.1.
C. The connections between the elevator guide rails and the structural framing are
typically the responsibility of the engineer-of-record for the building system. At a
minimum, connection details between the rail bracket and structural framing are
required. Calculations and details for the elevator connections to the structural framing
should be provided for review. The design shall consider concurrent multi-directional
loading as determined by the elevator manufacturer. The required locations and
maximum spacing for the connection points should be identified in the structural
drawings. See IBCSection 107.2.1 and 1604.4.
d. The elevator shaft is a 34-foot tall wood-framed structure. Calculations substantiating that
shrinkage of the structure will not adversely affect the performance of the elevator are
recommended. Elevator rails should be evaluated for induced axial loads or provided with
connections that allow for vertical differential movement. See IBC Section 2304.3.3.
e. The elevator shaft is framed by vertical wood studs and posts that appear intended to
span vertically from the first floor slab-on-grade to the second floor framing. See page 12
of the structural calculations. The structural drawings should specify installation of
continuous vertical framing between the floor systems. If the framing is not continuous,
additional calculations evaluating the out-of-plane stability and load path should be
submitted for review, including deflection limits for the elevator system. See IBC Sections
1604.2 and 1607.9.1.
DCI Response: An added elevator is no longer part of this project.
c9/6
