used for sleeping purposes. In an efficiency dwelling <br /> unit the detector shall be centrally located on the ceil- <br /> ing of the main room. Where sleeping rooms are on an <br /> upper level, the detector shall be placed at the center <br /> of the ceiling directly above the stairway. All detec- <br /> tors shall be located within 12 inches of the ceiling . <br /> Care shall be exercised to ensure that the installation <br /> will not interfere with the operating characteristics <br /> of the detector. When actuated, the detector shall <br /> provide an alarm audible in every dwelling unit. " <br /> Section 8 : That there is hereby added to the Uniform <br /> Building Code, 1973 Edition, the following section en- <br /> titled 1717: <br /> "Section 1717 - Rat-proofing of Buildings <br /> Any building or structure whose floor is not eighteen (18) <br /> inches above the level of the ground at all points shall be <br /> required to have a concrete or masonry foundations or <br /> skirting constructed of two layers of inorganic material <br /> with 1/2-inch mesh wire netting placed between the two <br /> layers . Such skirting shall extend 12 inches below the <br /> grade and 18 inches above the grade. Foundation walls or <br /> skirting shall extend around the entire perimeter of the <br /> building . Foundation ventilators shall be screened with <br /> 1/2-inch mesh. Where flooring is placed over any con- <br /> crete floor and not in direct contact with the floor pro- <br /> visions approved by the Building Official shall be made <br /> to rat-proof all concealed areas. " <br /> Section 9 : That Subsection 2517 (c) 6 of the Uniform <br /> Building Code, 1973 Edition, be and hereby is amended to <br /> read as follows: <br /> "Subsection 2517 (c) 6 - Foundation Ventilation <br /> Underfloor areas shall be ventilated by an approved <br /> mechanical means or by openings in exterior foundation <br /> walls . Such openings shall have a net area of not less <br /> than 72 square inches for each 25 linear feet of exterior <br /> wall . Openings shall be located as close to corners as <br /> practicable and shall provide cross ventilation on at <br /> least two approximately opposite sides. They shall be <br /> covered with corrosion-resistant wire mesh not less than <br /> 1/4-inch nor more than 1/2-inch in any dimension. " <br /> Section 10 : That Subsection 2305 (c) of the Uniform <br /> Building Code, 1973 Edition, be and hereby is amended to <br /> read as follows: <br /> "Subsection 2305 (c) - Snow Loads <br /> Snow loads full or unbalanced shall be considered in place <br /> of loads set forth in Table No . 23-B, where such loading <br /> will result in larger members or connections. <br /> The snow load shall be 25 pounds per square foot of pro- <br /> jected roof area. Potential accumulation of snow at <br /> valleys , parapets , roof structures, and offsets in roofs <br /> of uneven configuration shall be considered. <br /> -5- <br />
