Acting Appointment - The appointment of a person to a <br /> 6 position higher than his permanent Civil Service Classi- <br /> 7 fication. <br /> 8 2 . Applicant - A person who has formally applied for employ- <br /> 9 ment . <br /> 10 3 . Appointive Officer - Anyone appointed by the Mayor to an <br /> 11 unclassified position in accordance with the City Charter <br /> 12 and City Ordinances . <br /> 13 4 . Certification - The formal process of the Civil Service <br /> 14 Commission approving the establishment of an eligibility <br /> 15 list. <br /> 16 5 . Class - A position or group of positions sufficiently <br /> 17 alike so that a single descriptive class title can be <br /> 18 used for all positions in the class and so that the <br /> 19 knowledge, abilities and skills required for success in <br /> 20 the position are comparable enough to make practical a <br /> 21 general standard for recruitment and so that the levels <br /> 22 <br /> of difficulty and responsibility of the positions are <br /> 23 <br /> so nearly equal that the same salary range can be used. <br /> 24 <br /> 6 . Classification - The process of assigning a position to <br /> 25 <br /> a class within the classification plan. <br /> 26 <br /> 7 . Day Laborer - An employee occupying a position intended to <br /> 27 <br /> be occupied on less than a year around basis to cover <br /> 28 <br /> seasonal peak work loads , emergency work loads of limited <br /> 29 <br /> duration, necessary vacation relief and other situations <br /> 30 <br /> involving fluctuating staff. <br /> 31 <br /> 8 . Eligibility List - A list of names of all persons passing <br /> 32 <br /> an examination arranged in order of final scores earned, <br />
