Skylic hts .;nd Ventilators. <br /> Skylights and ventilators of fire-resistive superstructures <br /> constructed of thin glass in metal frames, each not less than 100 <br /> square feet in area, shall be placed between curtain boards and <br /> extended longitudinally along and on each side of the ridge. .bbove <br /> and below the skylight there shall be placed standard metal screens, <br /> the one above to be of sufficient strength to support one man's weight. <br /> Monitors or other ventilators giving equivalent venting capacity shall be <br /> acceptable. <br /> G. Vertical Openings. <br /> Stairs, elevators, escalators, shutes, and other vertical openings <br /> of fire-resistive superstructures shall have enclosures constructed <br /> of approved masonry or reinforced concrete, or of a form of construct-. <br /> ion of non-combustible material having a fire-resistance rating of not <br /> • less than two hours. When such enclosures form shafts extending from <br /> the pier deck to the roof, they shall be provided with thin glass in metal <br /> frame skylights. Door openings shall be protected by self-closing or <br /> automatic fire doors approved for the location in which they are to be <br /> used. <br /> Section 7. Non-Combustible Superstructures. <br /> All non-combustible superstructures shall be constructed of steel, <br /> concrete or other non-combustible materials and shall comply with the follow- <br /> ing specific requirements: <br /> A. Walls and Ooenines. <br /> • Walls shall consist of non-combustible construction such as <br /> corrugated iron, corrugated cement asbestos, or other equivalent <br /> material securely fastened to the frame. All doors in exterior walls <br /> shall be fire doors or shall be' of non-combustible construction. All <br /> openings in the exterior walls shall be provided with doors or windows <br /> of a type suitable for protection against the degree of exposure that <br /> may exist, as determined by the Chief of the Fire Department, but in <br /> all cases standard protection shall be provided for openings exposed <br /> within 30 feet by structures (not vessels). Fire doors and windows <br /> shall conform to the Standard for installation of Fire Doors and <br /> Windows (NFPA No. 80, 1W1. Exterior walls which are 'less than <br /> 30 feet from other buildings or from property lines shall be of construct- <br /> ion of not less than four (4) hour fire resistance. At intervals of <br /> approximately 200 feet along exterior walls there shall be a dwarf or <br /> "smash" door, designated by suitable signs, for the use of watchmen, <br /> firemen and workmen. <br /> B. Roof. <br /> • Roof decks shall be constructed of corrugated iron, corrugated <br /> cement asbestos, or other non-combustible material of equivalent <br /> strength and fire characteristics. Treated wood planking two inches <br /> nominal thickness, splined or tongued and grooved, may be used as <br /> roof decking provided such wood is treated to make it fire retardant <br /> in accordance with the requirement of NFPA Standard No. 703, adopted <br /> May, 1961. Decks shall be capable of supporting men for fire fighting <br /> Ordinance -7- <br />
